Taking Red Meat Out of Our Diet

A big decision has been made in the Henderson household. For the New Year, we will take red meat completely out of the kids’ diet. There has been a great deal of research on red meat and how cows are actually raised. Unfortunately, most cows are raised in an extremely unhealthy environment. They are given hormones and actually fed chicken litter in some cases. Some of the cows are given ground up diseased animals as part of their daily diet. Although not all farmers participate in these practices, it is not always easy to tell which farmers are raising cows the way they should be raised.

As I look at the development of my kids and their health, I feel that there is something to be said for the kids that do not eat a high amount of red meat in their diets. The saying you are what you eat is still true. If anyone ingests a significant amount of red meat, they are also ingesting the hormones, pesticides, and antibiotics being given to these animals. As we see ailments such as asthma, ADHD, and the inability to fight off colds increase, we have to ask ourselves what could we do differently to affect this outcome. Our bodies react and build immunities based off of what we put into our bodies. Our kids are reacting to the steroids and antibiotics by growing faster than they should and having illnesses that were not so common in previous years.

One way that my husband and I plan to tackle this issue is to cut out red meat. Please do the research for yourself to know what you are feeding your kids.

Label Reading

As I try to convert to healthier eating options for the fam, I am constantly challenged with finding meals that are tasty and nutritious. I have started reading labels. When I look at the labels and realize you can not even pronounce a lot of what is in the food we are eating, I know that there is a problem. It has been stated the top ingredients listed on a label make up the majority of what is in the food product. If you can not pronounce those top items, then it is no telling what is in the food you are eating.

So, I am looking to add in more food that is locally grown and pesticide free. There are several farmers markets, a Whole Food’s, and a Fresh Market within driving distance. The key is going to be planning……

What's 4 Dinner?????

This is the question every single day in our household.....What in the world are we going to eat for dinner??? We know that it is coming everyday, but we still do not seem to be prepared for it. As parents, my husband and I are struggling trying to find good, healthy options for dinner. Well, I guess it is every meal that we are thinking about how can we make this meal a healthy meal. So, I am in search of recipes, new restaurants, new grocery stores, anywhere that can help in this dilemma of what are we going to eat for each meal.

You may be asking what did we have for dinner tonight......IHOP (not a good choice).

Posting Number 1

My idea for this blog came about because of all of the high fructose corn syrup information that has been on the news. I was amazed at what we are actually eating and feeding to our kids. This subject of eating healthy and providing my family with healthy options has been on my mind for a while. I just have not made a complete transition as of yet, but I hope to get there soon!

It is not cheap to eat healthy. It also takes some planning. So, as I go through this journey, I thought I would keep track of it through this blog. I am certain there are other parents with the same thought in the back of their head as far as how to feed the family in a healthier way. My hope is that as parents we can bounce ideas off of each other about how to influence the decision makers about our food system. We have to reinvent the way we think about the food that goes in to our bodies. It affects everything from our health to our quality of life.

So, feel free to join the holistic parenting movement.
